Review 2017 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
About the Wine
Winegrowing runs deep in Quilceda Creek's family’s veins, with a commitment to excellence that knows no bounds.
When Alex Golitzin founded Quilceda Creek, he took his uncle André Tchelistcheff’s advice to heart: make one wine and make it well. And for Alex, there was no doubt that wine would be Cabernet Sauvignon. In the several decades since, Quilceda Creek has never wavered from this focus, relentlessly pursuing perfection with every vintage.
Quilceda Creek would not be what it is today without Paul Golitzin, Alex and Jeannette Golitzin’s son and their President and Winemaker. When he was named winemaker in 1992, just 14 years after Quilceda Creek was founded, Paul made it his mission to bring the winery to new heights of quality. He became laser focused on vineyard sourcing, precision viticultural practices and new techniques and technologies in the winery. He began experimenting with yeasts, worked with coopers to develop custom barrels for Quilceda Creek, and kept scrupulous historical vineyard and vintage records to identify the strongest blocks and rows at each property.

With Eleven 100-Point Vintages and Numerous 99's, You Know Quality Is Always Their Top Priority
This release truly showcases the singular and elusive perfume of the Champoux Vineyard. Aromas and flavors of violets, lavender, blackberry, cassis, and plum fruit provide the ethereal through line, with hints of cocoa nib, spice, and minerals acting as counterpoints. The wine has an otherworldly, silky texture that enables the rich fruit to coat the palate horizontally, rather than front-to-back, allowing the taster to experience the wine’s purity and seamless integration with each harmonious sip.
Champoux Vineyard is one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA of the Columbia Valley. Originally planted in the early 1970s and 1980s, this much-revered vineyard has been the source of some of the world’s most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignons, powerful wines known for their gorgeous fruit, balanced acidity and elegant tannins. Quilceda Creek has sourced fruit from Champoux since 1986 and owns and farms 134 of its 169 acres.
TASTING NOTES:
The wine shows high-toned violets with shades of sagebrush, milk chocolate covered Bing cherry, creme de cassis and anise tones that all sing in harmony in the glass. The palate is rich and layered, yet extremely polished, with a pillowy texture. Deep layers of espresso bean, Black Forest Cake, blueberry compote, graphite and sandalwood in this highly complex range of flavors. The length of this wine is truly outstanding, as is the silky texture which makes the wine effortlessly glide across the mid-palate. Generous and approachable at this juncture with a long decant, the 2017 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon will enjoy an exceedingly long life ahead of it.
