About the Wine
Cabernet Sauvignon has always been and will always be Groth's passion and primary focus, and they have planted it in such a way to produce the most authentic and expressive wine possible. Each of the varieties is carefully planted to align with its ideal soil type, rootstock, clone, and trellising. From 1999 to 2003, under the leadership of Winemaker Michael Weis, all 54 acres of their Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon were strategically replanted with new clones and rootstock. Preserving the distinct provenance of the estimable Reserve Cabernet, production was halted during this time, reintroducing the wine in 2005 once the newly planted vines had come of age.

Winegrowers who are dedicated stewards of the land, understanding that the quality of the wines is inextricably linked to the well-being of the vineyards.

Groth believes that the magic in the bottle comes from what happens in the vineyards. Farming this land for more than four decades, they know each block intimately and cultivate each vine responsively. The vineyard and winemaking teams are fully integrated, working side by side throughout the seasons to produce outstanding wines of place, vintage after vintage. As caretakers of the sites they call home, farming their land sustainably, taking into consideration the impact they have on the environment, the communities surrounding their beautiful estate, and the health of the entire Napa Valley watershed.

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Representing the finest lots of the vintage from the Reserve blocks of the Oakville Estate, this wine is the pinnacle of their growing and winemaking efforts. When the family acquired the Oakville Estate in 1981, they knew it was a special property, one eminently suited to growing great Cabernet Sauvignon. It quickly became clear that certain Cabernet lots from the western edge of their property displayed unique, intriguing characteristics distinct enough to be bottled on their own.

Tasting Notes:

Deep and pure ruby in color, this wine has an abundance of enticing aromas: beginning with boysenberry and blueberry pie, and leading to pastry cream, a bit of toast and a hint of menthol. On the palate, the tannin is supple and smooth. Flavors of blueberry and blackberry first greet the taste buds, leading to notes of chocolate-covered cherries and a fruit-driven finish that pops.
