1988 DRC Richebourg!
The last bottle of the night from Thursday’s fantastic night! We popped the 1988 Domaine Romanee Conti Richebourg at Papas Brothers Steak House along with a 1976 and 1977 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard (which unfortunately were only partially consumed then forgotten in the Uber on the way home...)
The 88 DRC Richebourg was the perfect cap to a brilliant night. I mischievously blinded the group on the bottle once we sat down to dinner. The group unanimously agreed it was a vintage wine of superb quality, but no one was prepared for the big reveal! The wine was magical right out of the bottle even with a disintegrating cork. The nose showed elegant notes of wild strawberries, sour cherry, raspberries, lilies, milk chocolate, and the soft moss of forest floor. The palate was incredibly complex showing a medley of red fruit with sous boi, cinnamon, toasted oak, and exotic spices. The wine was comfortably full on the palate with a silky texture that brought me back to my favorite blanket as a child.
