The Languedoc Region

The Languedoc is legendary in French winemaking history, as it was here that the Romans first planted vines in 4 BC. The region is comprised of an impressive range of terroirs, allowing for the cultivation of a vast diversity of grape varieties. The climate is just right for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the high altitudes and cool temperatures of the foothills of the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Clay soils and schist on sunny slopes benefit Syrah, Merlot and Grenache, while the oceanic influences allow for the full expression of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, and warm microclimates facilitate the maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre.

Laroche in the Languedoc

Michel Laroche was one of the pioneers in the resurgence of quality winemaking in the south of France in the early 1980s. In 1996, he created Mas La Chevalière, a state-of-the-art winery on the grounds of a splendid 18th-century guesthouse, with the goal of producing wines that truly reflect the diversity of the Southern French varietals, climate and terroir.

Vineyards

Laroche Vineyards

The Mediterranean climate guarantees ample sunshine, however, the winery strives to find the coolest terroirs for each grape variety, making it necessary to adjust the orientation and altitude of the vineyards to allow for optimal maturity and fullest expression of varietal flavors.

Wine Tasting Notes:

Petit Chardonnay
This Petit Chardonnay is very aromatic with lovely floral and citrus notes. On the palate, the structure of this wine, lighter than a classic Chardonnay, has a nice acidity that balances with the low alcohol level. The smooth and crisp finish makes it a very pleasant wine

Chardonnay
This place is famous for its water springs, the Valley of Orb has a perfect microclimate to ripen grapes without losing balance and freshness. Clear pale straw color. Pungent citrussy aromas on the nose with yellow fruit richness. Bright flavors, ripe fruit in mouth. Good balance and aromatic finish.

Sauvignon Blanc
A warm summer with plenty of sunshine and cooling mediteranian winds left Laroche with a fantastic harvest. The wine shows a clear pale straw color. Pungent citrussy aromas on the nose with yellow fruit richness. Bright flavors, ripe fruit in mouth. Good balance and aromatic finish.

Rose
A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, the grapes are sourced from the Languedoc region, from Cévennes and Béziers, totaling 15 hectares (37 acres) of 25 year old vines. A brilliant pale pink color. Most of the Grenache contributes aromas of wild red fruit and grapefruit. The Syrah adds vivacity and structure to the wine, as well as a lovely spicy undertone. The Cinsault completes the aromatic palate with floral notes, adding a lovely complexity to this wine. Refreshing on the palate, with a lively, acidic finish.

Pinot Noir
Surrounded by a wall, just like the “clos” enclosures in Burgundy, Mas La Chevalière is a place of history and character where the “jardins à la française” offer a Mediterranean accent. Showing a bright ruby color. Ripe and pulpy cherry aroma on the nose. Juicy mouthfeel combined with supple, velvety tannins.

Cabernet Sauvignon

The acidity levels decreasing as early as the first days of August, as well as the tasting of the berries with phenolic ripeness, confirmed a great aromatic potential and were all triggers to an early harvest. Dark ruby color, with  Intense nose offering pungent black currant and subtle herbal tones. Great fruit concentration laced with developed tannic structure; good intensity and nice, juicy mouthfeel
